Welcome to the Benidorm social club

A Benidorm bar is reversing the usual Fylde folks' flight to sunny Spain by heading to Blackpool for a grand re-union next month.
Owners Nigel and Yvonne Turner have developed a tongue-in-cheek Cumberland Sports and Social club in their Benidorm bar.

Its “members” meet every afternoon from September to June – and now to fill their summer social diaries they have been invited

to Blackpool’s Queens Hotel at South Shore on the afternoon of Sunday, August 10, from 1pm.

“We have made membership forms and cards and so far have in excess of 450 members who are mainly holiday makers from the UK who come to see us whenever they are in Benidorm on holiday,” says Nigel. “The idea began when I employed Kevin Holt, an entertainer who takes on the role of a concert chairman very much in the style of Colin Crompton when he presented The Wheeltappers and Shunters Club on Granada TV.

“It became so popular that I devised the membership cards as a bit of a joke but it seems that people were actually interested so much so you can even apply to join via the internet on my website www.Cumberlandbarbenidorm.com”

The idea of a re-union came about when Nigel and Yvonne planned a few days visit to Blackpool.

“We thought that it would be an ideal place to stage a re-union event so got in touch with the Queens Hotel and they welcomed us with open arms,” said Nigel. “We’re not sure how many will attend but indications show that there will be at least 50 from all over the UK but I have a feeling there will be more.”
