Greetings from Spain and in particular from the sunny Costa Blanca where things are gearing up for our new season of the Cumberland Sports and Social Club meetings which start on Sunday 14 September 2008. During our summer recess we have been busy planning new ventures and ideas which we will be sharing with you all over the next few weeks. Our UK reunion which took place in August at the Queen’s Hotel and Churchill’s up there in Blackpool was a resounding success when over 70 members came to see us from far and wide. On behalf of Yvonne and myself may I take this opportunity to personally thank all those who made the trip, we were absolutely overwhelmed with the support we received. We are at the moment compiling a page of photographs taken on that afternoon and shall be posting them here on the website in due course together with an album which will be available to view in the bar. It was lovely to catch up with everyone and proved to us that we should refer to our members as friends as a good time was had by all. The Concert Chairman has been rather busy over summer as he and his lovely wife (even though he never takes her out in Benidorm) embarked on a charity tandem ride from John O’Groats to Lands End but sadly only got as far as Inverness due to technical problems which I have no doubt the Chairman will elaborate on over the coming months. Our hard working staff are continuing the good work but I think we must be paying them too much as Mark has just booked a holiday to Florida for 3 weeks in October! Cher and Ian have just returned from a trip to the UK which I understand was very enjoyable and Claire & Tom came to Blackpool with us and we also met up with them for a few beers in our home town of Sutton-in-Ashfield. The Karaoke is very much in keeping with what everyone has been used to but Tuesday nights we have decided to take a break from the norm and have recruited Rim to host a quiz night which we hope will prove popular with locals and tourists alike. When we take our night off Rab can still be found at the controls ensuring our high standards are maintained. We look forward to seeing many of our good friends in the near future and also if you’ve never yet ventured into the Cumberland Bar make a date to come and see us, there’s a warm welcome awaiting you. Bye for now
